Gwydir Shire Council continues to create opportunities for itself. In addition, Council continues to shape the community’s future with educational and infrastructure initiatives.

Council’s ongoing objectives include:

  • Maintaining the genuine Community of Interest feeling across the whole of the Shire which involves all of the remote villages as being an important part of the Shire;
  • Maintaining a viable financial base;
  • Applying best local government practices and procedures;
  • Maintain its highly skilled and valued workforce;
  • Continuing to provide an exceptionally high standard of readily accessible services to all residents and visitors; and
  • To ensure that the organisation functions in the most efficient and effective manner possible
  • Gwydir Shire Council has evolved into an optimalist Council. Council has sought and seized over the year more external funding opportunities; and has also capitalised on its existing assets by value adding. Council and Moree Plains Shire Council have formed the Australian Rural Road Group; a special interest group which seeks to obtain federal funding for an improved rural road network
